Shells
I make one size, 14” diameter, Irish bodhrans of many exotic and domestic woods by a process of gluing many segments of solid wood together. A rough set of rings are formed in this way and then glued together and then turned on a large wood lathe to produce a solid wooden hoop of approximate dimensions 14” (35.5 cm) outside diameter by 6” (15 cm) wide by 3/8” (.8 -.9 cm) thick. No bending of the wood takes place in this construction method. There is no plywood and thus very little glue. There hoops are almost completely “solid wood”. Each hoop rings when struck (before the head goes on).I use no stains or coloring in my shell finishes. Only clear finishes are used so the natural color and figure of the wood provides the stunning visual effects for each drum.I make drums of several domestic and exotic woods including black walnut, white and red oak, mahogany, cherry, bubinga, padauk, and others. Please email me to discuss your ideas for hoops you might like.

In conjunction with the exceptional craftsmanship and years of experience of Patrick Maiorana of the Monterey Bay Area, I can now offer hoops of very special construction and visual beauty. The hoops pictured are a sample of what can be done, limited only by your imagination (and sound wood construction practices). These drums are offered at an additional cost. The same drum sound quality is built into these drum. Please email me for details.
